Turn the lights off in your Den – now you’re inside my mind. My wife says I’m a dark writer; prone to create violence, terror, sex, evil people; but of course, the good guys have to come into the stories.

Many successful mystery writers, New York Times best sellers, are formula writers. The writer has the same hero, but dreams up new settings and villains to chase. A lot of readers like that approach, it’s a comfort thing, and for some writers it’s a ticket to big volume sales. Look at Lee Child’s hero, Jack Reacher. That’s an example.

But, as Robert Frost said in his beautiful poem, ‘I took the road less traveled, and it has made all the difference.’ Not in money or fame – that may never happen, but to me, writing is more of a way, or a yoga, a somewhat spiritual path, a sense of self-satisfaction that no non-writer can understand.

Writing has opened new doors in my mind and new experiences in my life. For the past four years, I took time off from writing novels and became fascinated with poetry. I took college critique courses on writing poetry, studied the art, and I’ve made a few presentations at the Orlando Museum of Art, where the curator and I created ‘paintings and poetry.’ Soon I will produce a book of my poems.

Now I’m back into novels. I’ve always wanted to see if I could write in difference genres, all with different characters. My first thought about a book was inspired back in the mid-1990’s by the Shoemaker-Levy comet, captured by the Hubble Space-craft, as all twenty-one pieces of it slammed, one by one, into the planet, Jupiter.

But just suppose the last piece veered off into space and came at earth. I wrote some of it, then put it aside to write and finish my first book, “The Final Plan.” A post World War II Nazi thriller on an international scale, that’s written in flash-backs from 1945 to the mid-1990’s.

I don’t restrict myself with out-lines. Many authors do, but I determine the theme of a novel and just sit at my computer and write it. It’s a method that flows with feelings and ideas.

Now I thought – I want to write about a heist, a robbery, but something original, not just another bank, armored truck, or jewelry theft, etc. So I spent some time in my office thinking, “what would be the biggest theft ever that one could imagine?” Of course, the mother of all heists – the U. S. gold depository at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Publishing is another matter. I love to write, but I’m not into marketing. I need a good literary agent, but then they’re just as hard to get as an editor at Simon and Schuster, or any other publishing house.

The development of the internet, electronic books have given authors a new life. We’re not dependent on literary agents or publishing house editors anymore. We don’t have to beg and submit query letters, etc. Now all four of my novels are e-Books. I’m jumping into space and riding the web.
